Who is Ryan Smyth?
Ryan Smyth is a hockey player in the National Hockey League who had played with the Edmonton Oilers for all of his professional career until the trade deadline of 2007 (February 27, 2007) when he was traded to the New York Islanders after being unable to reach an agreement with the organization to sign a new contract. He was a member of the Los Angeles Kings from 09-11, after a move from the Colorado Avalanche before the 09-10 season. As of June 2011, he was reacquired by the Edmonton Oilers.
Why Ryan Smyth?
Let me quote my TFL application: Ever since I started actively watching NHL hockey, and the Edmonton Oilers I immediately zeroed in on number 94. He is the (small) player with the big number on his back, who rides the line between the white and blue ice in front of the goalie, screening the shot. In my opinion Ryan Smyth is what hockey should be, it should be all grit and digging for the puck. Not only is he a great player, he (and his wife and family) are great contributors to Edmonton and the surrounding community and to the international hockey scene.
